The Rotunda’s Return: A Video Journey

The Pioneer tells the story of the recently debuted Rotunda and the changes that have happened under the scaffolding in the last three years.

After three years, the moment UVa students, staff and alumni have been waiting for has finally arrived: the scaffolding on the Rotunda has come down, revealing a new iteration of the building that so strongly encapsulates the modern, yet antiquated, paradox of our beloved university. The last time students were allowed to enter the Rotunda was when the Class of 2017, our soon-to-be graduates, had just started their first year. Now, the Rotunda is back in action, and with it, so are the University’s students.

On September 15, 2016 a team of Pioneer producers stepped behind the scenes at the Rotunda.  The Pioneer is excited to present the changes and to help tell the story behind the Rotunda’s grand re-opening.

Ready to study in the new Rotunda? Here’s what you need to know…

  • Quiet study hours are every Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evening from 5:00-10:00PM.
  • You may swipe in using your UVa student ID card at the Rotunda’s Lawn-side entrance on the ground level.
  • The North Oval Room on the second floor is available for small study groups when it’s not reserved for student meetings.
  • The building is reserved for special events from Wednesday through Saturday which may sometimes limit study time.
  • You can bring study snacks and covered drinks, but please be considerate of others and clean up after yourself– we want to keep our beautiful new Rotunda spotless as long as possible!
  • You may reserve a room in the Rotunda for special events, study groups, or student meetings.
