New City Arts: Charlottesville’s Thriving Arts Scene

New City Arts is an arts initiative in the Charlottesville community that aims to provide a creative, collaborative environment and bridge the worlds of U.Va. and Charlottesville.

New City Arts, a local arts initiative located on Charlottesville’s downtown mall at the Welcome Gallery, exists to be a creative, collaborative community for artists and arts enthusiasts. The Pioneer sat down with U.Va Arts alum and Executive Director of New City Arts, Maureen Brondyke, and Studio Arts Professor and inaugural artist-in-residence, Alyssa Pheobus Mumtaz, to talk about the Charlottesville art scene and what life is like for artists beyond “the ivory tower of the institution.”

Check out New City Arts’ website to learn about opportunities to get involved and explore Charlottesville arts.
