The word “startup” is often derided as a farce, a fugazi, and – worst of all – a buzzword. Conjuring an exact definition of the term is admittedly tough, but if you look in the right places, “startups” are really quite easy to understand. Enter New York City.

Last semester, HackCville took over 50 students to the Big Apple to get an in-depth look at some of the city’s youngest companies. For the price of just $150, students spent the weekend touring businesses, networking with alumni, and enjoying all that New York has to offer.

While The Pioneer was covering the event, many students were ecstatic to tell us about the connections they made, the business techniques they learned, and even the food they ate (which was free, by the way). But more than anything else, students walked away with a working knowledge of how recently established businesses operate, and how they can join or even found one.

This, in a nutshell, is what makes HackCville’s semi-annual startup trips so special. If startups were something you could understand just from talking about them, HackCville wouldn’t organize these trips. But our friends on Elliewood Ave know the impact of experiencing startup culture first-hand, and all of the students who went to New York are damn glad they do.
