An introduction to digital photography
Learn the core skills all photographers need
You’ll learn about the elements of the exposure triangle (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO), and gain the skills necessary to operate cameras on manual settings. Beyond simply being able to manipulate the camera, you’ll be trained in photo composition, lighting, and the fundamentals of editing with Adobe Lightroom. By the end of the course, you’ll begin to develop your own personal style.
Start your portfolio of work
As part of the course you’ll also complete several photography projects each centered around a different theme (composition, lighting, etc). We’ll then help you set up a personal portfolio website where you can publish all of your work.
Get prepared to freelance
Beyond the mechanics of photography, you will also hear from guest speakers about the photography as a professional platform, and learn various tips and tricks for working within the field of photography. After Exposure, you will have the knowledge and skills to begin shooting photography in a paid, professional setting, or simply pursue a personal love of photography.

Fees & Accessibility
Course Fee: $125
Materials Fee: $40 (Adobe Lightroom License)
Each of our courses is just $125 — that’s less than a weekly lunch out for the semester. We are committed to making our courses accessible to all. We reduce or eliminate the program fee to all students who need it, no questions asked. Our aim is to enable everyone who wants to learn and join the HackCville community.
Exposure has an additional $40 Materials Fee which covers the cost of an Adobe Lightroom license for the duration of the course and a small SD card. This fee, like the course fee, can be waived for those with financial need.
All of our courses meet once a week for 2 hours. Courses start the third week of UVA classes (Sep 8) and continue weekly through the end of November. Courses expect a 4-6 hour/week commitment. Outside of the 2 hours in your workshop meeting time, you can expect to meet with your instructor weekly for check-ins (at flexible times) and to spend some time working with your classmates on projects.
We offer 1 section of Exposure:
Section A – Sundays, 11am-1pm
Exposure was well-organized and incredibly fun. The leaders were knowledgeable and friendly, so it was easy to learn from them.
Exposure course graduate
Exposure was a good balance of actually learning useful material and working on tangible projects to practice these skills.
